Tourism and Recreation in Grant Parish
The Grant Chamber of Commerce recognizes that while there are other “larger”
businesses in Grant Parish, there is no “greater industry” than
tourism and recreation. As tourism grows as an industry in the state and the
nation, Grant Parish has slowly come to recognize that tourism is a viable
resource for the parish in terms of economic growth and employment. With the
numerous lakes and rivers that are located throughout the parish, with Kisatchie
National Forest among the parish’s natural resources, it is only natural
that the parish desires to capitalize on those assets.
Kisatchie National
Forest offers camping, swimming, hiking and fishing at its Stuart
Lake site near Pollock and hiking and nature trails throughout the parish.
For more information, contact US Forest Service, Catahoula District, (318)
765-3554.
Colfax Recreation Area is a $2.4 million facility located on the Red River
on LA Hwy. 158 near Colfax. The facility offers overnight camping sites
($12 per site fee), picnic pavilions, a children’s play area, bathhouse
along with boat ramp, floating marina and parking for vehicles and trailers.
To reserve a campsite or for more information, contact (318) 627-2640.
The Red River Waterway Commission
maintains this facility.
Smaller public boat landings at Colfax and Montgomery offer access to the
Red River, but there are no sanitation facilities and limited parking. Other
areas popular with recreationists include Iatt, Nantachie and Hardwater Lakes,
Little River, Camp Livingston and Breezy Hill (primitive camping, hiking,
four-wheeler and dirt bike trails and hunting).
There are public access boat ramps on the area’s major lakes, and several
sites along Little River. All of these waterways are popular for fishing,
boating and hunting, while Little River and Red River can also be enjoyed
by water-skiers.
Numerous convenience stores throughout the parish provide hunting and
fishing licenses, fishing and camping needs, gas and propane for those
who hunt and fish, and are also a good source of information as to “where
the fish are biting” and what’s available in the area.
4-H
Camp Grant Walker is housed in Pollock, Louisiana. Every summer,
many children from around the state go to 4-H Camp here where they
learn by doing. The state club also hosts other events at Camp
Grant Walker such as meetings, and the State Jr. Leadership Conference.
